The former president of the infamous MtGox exchange once again apologized for his role in the bankruptcy of the exchange in 2014. On Wednesday at Reddit Mark Karpeles published a letter to the Exchange users, many of whom became participants of a long battle in the struggle for their money lost by the exchange. In the letter, he responded to accusations that he personally would benefit from the decision of the Japanese courts considering the case. According to the Wall Street Journal, Karpeles can get almost a billion dollars, which will remain after the Exchange users receive returns on the current settlement scheme. Under the decision of the Tokyo court, the creditors of MtGox will be paid the cost of their Bitcoins in the Japanese yen at the time of closing the exchange, and not in the cryptocurrency.

According to Karpeles, as a result, he will receive more than 160,000 BTC and BCH as the sole owner of the exchange, the total value of which exceeds $ 1 billion at the current rate.

Karpeles wrote:

"I don't want this. I don't want this billion dollars. From day one I never expected to receive anything from this bankruptcy. The fact that today this is a possibility is an aberration and I believe it is my responsibility to make sure it doesn't happen."

In particular, Karpeles stressed his intention to support the plan to change the status of the case to another type of legal process called civil rehabilitation, thus supporting the exchange's creditors, who gave the cause a push last December. If the status of the case is changed, the users of the exchange will be able to receive refunds in Bitcoins.

"I never imagined things would end this way and I am forever sorry for everything that's taken place and all the effect it had on everyone involved," he concluded.

Although Karpeles did not tell the public anything new, in particular about the promotion of plans for reimbursement of funds to the exchange's creditors, it is known that work is in progress in this direction. In March, it was reported that the asset manager in the MtGox bankruptcy case Nobuaki Kobayashi had already sold approximately 35,000 BTC and BCH for a total of $ 400 million. At the same time, Kobayashi claimed that he was selling crypto-currencies in the period from December 2017 to February 2018 and tried to avoid influence on the course.
