Co-founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin received a doctorate from the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Basel for his invaluable contribution to the development of the blockchain technology.
The presentation took place on November 30 at the Dies Academicus, the annual celebration in honor of the founding of the university.Professor Aleksander Berentsen, dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics, noted that "Buterin's innovations changed the rules of the game," and his contribution "was the beginning of the path that science and industry followed when they started to work together."
In a statement, Berentsen said that Buterin deserved this honorary award thanks to his "exceptional creative and innovative solutions that initiated the formation of the digital revolution of our time."
In addition, the faculty also noted that Buterin shares the views of the Center for Innovative Finance at the University of Basel in such areas as game theory, economic incentives and management.
"I'm honored to have received an honorary doctorate from the University of Basel, the oldest University of Switzerland. Switzerland is well known for its innovative blockchain research," said Buterin.
At age 19, Buterin published an article titled "Ethereum: A Next Generation Smart Contract & Decentralized Application Platform." The university believes that this work was the beginning of a new stage of development in the sphere of decentralization of software applications.
